Australian open-air living supplies several options for members of the family to spend quality time while being healthy. School-age babies produce a natural curiosity for their surroundings. Mother and father ought to take this as a terrific occasion to present certain entertainment recreation. Carports make a great component to Australian homes and can double as locations for households to have out-of-doors shade. The latest pergola designs are wonderful for bbqs in the lawn.

You can put a car port to your house to help keep your vehicle protected from tough aspects. In case you have ample real estate property, seek the services of a corporation to create a swimming pool near the carport. Several car port home builders could also construct swimming pools. During family time, just move the car and utilize the car port as your shade. For extra enjoyment, install an backyard speakers in the car port. A lightweight barbeque grill is yet another great add-on. Its also possible to shift your car and build a ping-pong table under the car port for an afternoon of table tennis with the youngsters. If your carport has sufficient space, it might even house a pool table, which can be ideal for a night of relaxation with loved ones or pals.

Use a firm that installs carports and choose a layout that suits your house. Car port constructors can propose components or allow you to select the type of timber youd like them to utilise. Allow them to think outside the box but actually tell them what you want, like the choice of color along with other characteristics. They are able to tailor-make according to your features, like incorporating loudspeakers. They are able to show you a 3D demonstration of your choice of style before they build. Think about other elements too, like the price tag and payment arrangement, and the completion time.

Pergolas are garden features that shape a shaded seating space or pathway. Earlier contractors made pergolas with brick or stone. Contemporary pergola designs, even so, may use many other materials like timber. A well-constructed pergola can boost the elegance and bring to the worth of an Australian property. Consider it as putting a low-cost place to your property. Families can enjoy the outdoors while sitting under the shade. Quality time can include just sitting and talking in your pergola, or an excitement open-air dining experience. As with a carport, choose a pergola that can enhance your houses architectural style.

Several corporations that construct pergolas also set up private pools or health spas. It may bring more value to your home, and give your family further out-of-doors fun-based activities. Week-ends can become more intriguing if you have amenities such as these in your house. A portable spa close to your pergola in the yard offers instant relaxation and family bonding time.

Both carports and pergolas are popular again. They can put beauty and worth to an Australian home, and provide family members with healthier and more economical options to spend quality time outdoors. Many builders today use better, greener, and more aesthetically pleasing materials, while keeping building and installation costs affordable.

U.S. stocks and other risky investments are plunging as fear intensifies about a rupture in Europe's financial system.

The European Commission said early Wednesday that confidence across that continent fell sharply this month. People are withdrawing cash from Spanish banks. Spain's 10-year borrowing rate spiked to the highest since it joined the euro.

Strong demand for safe, easily traded investments pushed the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note to a record low of 1.63 percent from 1.74 percent late Tuesday.

The Dow is down 155 at 12,425 shortly before noon Eastern time. The S&P 500 is down 18 at 1,314. The Nasdaq composite index is down 36 at 2,834.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar and aluminum maker Alcoa sank as traders anticipated that the global economy would weaken.

Blacks, Gays And The Church: A Complex Relationship

Blacks, Gays And The Church: A Complex Relationship
Corey Dade ("NPR," May 22, 2012)

USA - Fairly or not, African-Americans have become the public face of resistance to same-sex marriage, owing to their religious beliefs and the outspoken opposition of many black pastors.

Yet the presence of gays and lesbians in black churches is common. And the fact that they often hold leadership positions in their congregations is the worst kept secret in black America.

While many black pastors condemn gays and lesbians from the pulpit, the choir lofts behind them often are filled with gay singers and musicians. Some male pastors themselves have been entangled in scandals involving alleged affairs with men.

"Persons who are in the closet serve on the deacon boards, serve in the ministry, serve in every capacity in the church," the Rev. Dennis W. Wiley, pastor of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ in Maryland, says of black churches. Wiley is a prominent advocate of gay marriage. "I do believe a certain hypocrisy is there."

President Obama's recent announcement that he supports same-sex marriage turned the spotlight on reservations many blacks harbor about gay rights. Most polls show African-Americans evenly divided about gay marriage, but the vocal opposition, led by preachers, has gained more attention.

"This particular decision I find appalling, and I could not disagree with the president more on it," the Rev. Patrick Wooden, senior pastor of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in North Carolina, said on NPR's All Things Considered. Wooden helped lead the recent campaign that outlawed gay marriage in his state.

Last week, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People passed a resolution endorsing same-sex marriage as a civil right to be protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Churches Reap Benefits

Some say pastors' hostility cuts hard against the history of how countless black churches have flourished. The virtuosity of gay singers, musicians and composers has been the driving force in developing popular gospel choirs ? even chart-topping, Grammy-winning acts ? that make money for a church, help expand congregations and raise the profiles of pastors.

It all happens under an unspoken "don't ask, don't tell" custom that allows gay people to be active in the church, though closeted, and churches to reap the benefits of their membership.

Some say the arrangement is not only hypocritical, but exploitative.

"On the one hand, you're nurtured in the choir but you also have to sit through some of those fire and brimstone sermons about homosexuality being an abomination," says E. Patrick Johnson, an openly gay gospel singer and author of Sweet Tea: An Oral History of Black Gay Men of the South.

"But a lot of these choirs or choir directors, or ministers of music, will not be open about their sexuality for fear of repercussion from their pastors and church members, but they allow the church to exploit their talent," says Johnson, also a Northwestern University professor whose expertise includes black studies and sexuality.

Johnson and others believe that modern gospel music itself is largely defined by the artistry of black gay men.

Bishop Yvette Flunder of Oakland, Calif., is openly gay and the founder of The Fellowship, an organization of black pastors and churches openly welcoming of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members. Flunder once said during a 2010 interview that gospel choirs "always" have been havens for LGBT people: "In our indigenous expression, that wasn't a problem. It was Christianity that demonized gay people."

As Johnson puts it, "You can't throw a shoe back through history without hitting gay and lesbian women and even transgender singers."

Johnson describes church choirs as a welcoming community within a community "where you meet other gay people, so it becomes a form of socializing."

Commentator Keith Boykin, who is African-American and gay, calls it a paradox: "The church might be the most homophobic and most homotolerant of any institution in the black community."

Wooden, the pastor in North Carolina, agrees that the presence of gays and lesbians in choirs or other church ministries reveals the "duplicity and, frankly, the hypocrisy of the black church. ... The thing that troubles me is these people are almost taken advantage of. As long as they can sing, people look the other way."

However, Wooden insists "we are not all homophobic." He says he welcomes members of the LGBT community to worship at his church. He says his church also has continued to support gay members who have contracted HIV/AIDS, unlike some other churches that ostracize them ? a practice many people on both sides of the issue say has been common.

But that's where Wooden's self-described sense of fairness ends. He forbids LGBT people from participating in the choir or any other church ministries.

"If you love them ? truly love them ? you will tell them the truth on the front side," Wooden says. "We believe homosexuality is a sin. Those who serve, you want their lifestyles to uphold the standards of the church. This is not limited to homosexuals or lesbians. If I know an individual is committing adultery or living with a member of the opposite sex who they're not married to, they can't serve either."

Consequences, Whether Closeted Or Out

A small but growing number of churches, such as the Rev. Wiley's and Flunder's City of Refuge United Church of Christ, publicly welcome LGBT members, and their ranks are swelling with people leaving intolerant churches.

But many others say they are torn between their allegiance to their churches, which form the cultural and institutional backbone of black communities, and their desire to live free of homophobia. They often chose the former, convinced that their sexuality is a sin.

"They would rather suppress their identity than denounce their church," says Sharon J. Lettman-Hicks, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, an LGBT advocacy group. "I've seen people refuse to divorce themselves from their church in spite of the ignorance that spews from the pulpit. ... It's their way of repenting. They victimize themselves through self-oppression."

Gospel music superstar and megachurch pastor Donnie McClurkin shocked the non-gospel world years ago by revealing in a 2001 book that God "delivered" him from a gay "lifestyle" that he said was a result of being sexually abused as a boy.

McClurkin, who has said being gay is a choice, was criticized by the gay community for setting back the LGBT goal of gaining acceptance.

When gospel music star Tonex (Anthony Charles Williams II) came out in 2009, the gospel music world turned on him, and his record sales plummeted. He left his family church, where he'd been a pastor, and reinvented himself as B. Slade, now a favorite in the LGBT music scene.

Rise Of Black Homophobia: Morality Turns Political

For decades, black ministers addressed LGBT people in their sermons only occasionally. This was true even as HIV/AIDS began claiming the lives of numerous African-American men in black churches, especially gospel singers in the early 1990s.

By 2004, a number of high-profile black ministers emerged as outspoken opponents of same-sex marriage as part of their alignment with the conservative Christian movement, which helped re-elect President George W. Bush that year. Black ministers and black lawmakers helped pass gay marriage bans in several states. In exchange, ministers received federal funds for their community programs through Bush's faith-based initiative.

In 2006, the National Black Justice Coalition held its first Black Church Summit in Atlanta, at which the Rev. Al Sharpton became the highest-profile pastor to denounced homophobia and call for greater inclusion of LGBT people.

Pastors No Strangers To Gay Sex Scandals

The sexual behavior of some male pastors, many of them also gospel singers, also has stoked rumors or led to scandal.

Bishop Eddie Long, the leader of one of the nation's largest black churches, in suburban Atlanta, was sued in 2010 by three young men who claimed Long coerced them into sexual relationships. Long denied the accusations and the cases were settled out of court.

The controversy was all the more notable because Long was a prominent supporter of Georgia's gay marriage ban, passed in 2004, and a proposed U.S. constitutional ban. He rankled many civil rights veterans when he and the Rev. Bernice King, a daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King (who supported gay marriage), led a march to protest same-sex marriage that started at the King family crypt.

"Some of my colleagues protest too greatly," Wiley says.

Prior to the accusations against Long, most controversies rarely escaped mention inside black communities and gospel music circles.

The Bay Area in the 1970s had arguably the most visible presence of LGBT members in black churches, just as the broader gay rights movement had gained momentum in the region. The Love Center Church in Oakland, Calif., founded by the late Bishop Walter Hawkins, one of gospel music's biggest stars in the 1970s and 1980s, made waves for welcoming black gays and lesbians.

Following the 1991 death of the Rev. James Cleveland, the gospel music legend still regarded as the "king" of the genre, a male member of Cleveland's choir sued his estate claiming that he contracted HIV due to his five-year sexual relationship with the singing icon. The lawsuit was settled out of court.

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is promising to maintain an American military "with no comparable power anywhere in the world."

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee faced a San Diego crowd estimated at 5,000 on Monday in what was billed as a Memorial Day service, not a campaign rally. But he drew clear contrasts with President Barack Obama.

Romney is warning against shrinking America's military in Europe's image. He says America must have the world's strongest military to win wars and to prevent them.

Romney was joined by Arizona Sen. John McCain, a Vietnam veteran who says Romney is "fully qualified" to be the nation's commander in chief.

Obama paid tribute to veterans in the Washington area Monday.

A new Gallup poll shows veterans prefer Romney over the president.

96% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (89) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (85) | Rotten (4) | DVD (1)

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gorgeously shot, ingeniously crafted, ?ber-Andersonian bonbon that, even in its most irritatingly whimsical moments, remains an effective deliverer of cinematic pleasure.

"Moonrise Kingdom" breezes along with a beautifully coordinated admixture of droll humor, deadpan and slapstick.

Wes Anderson's most sartorially significant film yet.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

Moonrise Kingdom is bewitching.

Food, Wine, Love and Friendship --San Francisco Style: Pasta Moon ...

STAYCATION: 05.18.2012 @ 8:30 PM

AS SEEN ON CHECK, PLEASE! BAY AREA: http://www.youtube.com...

The lounge was sleek and sexy.
The food and drink were tasty.
The jazz guitarist got my juices flowing...........

AMBIANCE/DECOR:
Pasta Moon is a good place to have a nice dinner in Half Moon Bay. The outside looked like a very??casual?eatery with a couple of patio tables. The menu was written on a blackboard.

Upon walking in at around 8:30 PM, we were greeted by the tantaliziing jazz music being played by the guitarist on the stage. We were offered to be seated at the main dining area but we opted for the lounge that was modern and sexy. It was spacious with high ceilings with exposed slat beams.

The mood lighting of hanging red/yellow glass lights were turned down. Low lounge chairs made of red leather along with eclectic dining tables were available for seating.

FOOD AND DRINK: (Sorry, no food pics. Too dark for the camera!)
ITALIAN 77 $10:?? St.Germain Elderflower Liquor, Fresh Lemon Juice, Prosecco?
* Citrusy bubbly. Refreshing. However,?it tasted more like?champagne with lemon juice. Just okay.

BRUSCHETTA $10: Burrata cheese served over local greens and sun dried tomato pesto
* 2 Bruchetta piled high with greens and sun dried tomatoes. Good and filling!

TAGLAITELLE PRAWNS $ 22 : Spring Asparagus, lemon, parmesan, basil, garlic, EVOO
* Good but nothing remarkable. It tastes like the the bowl of pasta that I make at home when I want something simple and comforting. The pasta was chewy but slighty dry. The plump prawns were fresh and generous.

PASTA MOON LASAGNA : $12/$19 House made Sicilian sausage, ricotta, parmesan, chili flake, tomato sauce
*?Enrique got the full order. Sadly, he got food poisoning at San Benito Bar earlier in the afternoon. He barely touched his lasagna. I tasted it to compare it to my lasagna and it was actually pretty good! This lasagna is Pasta Moon's signature dish.

VERDICT:
Pasta Moon is a solid dining venue in Half Moon Bay. It is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary this coming June 2012. It's farm to table philosophy making use of the local, sustainable produce is just one of the good reasons why this 25 year old restaurant should be patronized. The rest is the house made pasta and lovely ambiance.

TOTAL: $90 including tip, 1 alc and 2 non-acl drinks

NOTEWORTHY:
1. Sexy lounge area.
2. Check out Pasta Moon's Live Music Calendar for free, no cover music until 9PM.

Maryland returns to NCAA title game

FOXOBOROUGH ? Drew Snider tied his career high with four goals and Maryland advanced to the NCAA title game for the second straight year with a 16-10 victory over third-seeded Duke on Saturday.

Owen Blye added three goals for the Terrapins (12-5), who will play in-state rival Loyola for the national title Monday. The Greyhounds held off Notre Dame 7-5 in the first semifinal.

Maryland put away the Blue Devils (15-5) with a run of six straight goals after Duke pulled to 10-8 early in the fourth quarter.

The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals split the regular-season series with both winning at home, but the Terps dominated in the most important matchup, scoring the first three goals of the game and getting more than half their shots into the net.

Maryland, which lost to Virginia 9-7 last year in the title game, finished with 29 shots and scored the most goals Duke has allowed this season.

Niko Amato made 10 saves for the Terps, who advanced to their 11th championship game.

Duke?s Dan Wigrizer allowed 13 goals before being pulled in the fourth quarter as Maryland put the game out of reach.

The Blue Devils unraveled quickly.

Robert Rotanz pulled Duke to 10-8 with an unassisted goal 2:16 into the fourth quarter. It was his second of the game and 40th of the season, but Maryland answered quickly on Snider?s goal with 12:17 left.

Blye bounced a shot past Wigrizer for his second goal of the game, putting the Terps up 12-8 with 10:09 left, then Joe Cummings added another for Maryland just 59 seconds later. It was the 31st goal of the season for Cummings, who also had three assists and leads the Terps in scoring.

Now down 13-8 minutes after pulling within two, Duke called a timeout after Cummings? goal with 9:10 left.

It didn?t help.

Duke also replaced Wigrizer in goal with Kyle Turri, who charged way out to try an intercept a pass, leaving a wide-open net for Blye?s third goal of the game, putting Maryland up 14-8 with 6:01 remaining. Turri got caught out of position again with 5:02 to go and Kevin Forster took advantage with his second goal of the game.

Sean McGuire made it 16-8 with his first goal of the season with only 2:57 remaining.

Duke finally ended the Terps? scoring run when he scored with 1:27 left as both teams sent in the reserves to finish out the game.

America's newest veterans are filing for disability benefits at a historic rate. Government officials say that 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries they say are service-related. Officials tell The Associated Press that's more than double the estimated 21 percent who filed such claims after the earlier Gulf War in the 1990s.

These new veterans are claiming an average of eight to nine ailments such as bad backs, hearing loss or post-traumatic stress. By comparison, Vietnam veterans are receiving compensation for less than four ailments and veterans from World War II and Korea, about two.

Experts say the weak economy in part may be leading to more claims. Also, many veterans have multiple injuries from bomb blasts.

Home United Electrical Services Improvement Solutions That You Can Use

With tools and knowledge you can make many dream projects around your home become reality. This article is packed with helpful tips and advice about how to make the most of the potential projects around your home. Read each tip to learn how to turn potential into reality in your home.

When doing a DIY home improvement project, put safety first. Make sure you wear protective equipment such as a hard hat and goggles when needed. Use power tools (especially ones you are not familiar with) with extreme caution. Read the directions and ask for help when needed. Home improvement stores are a great resource of information.

Some quick and easy home improvement projects can yield big energy savings. Installing Energy Star qualified light bulbs will reduce your carbon emissions and use 75 percent less energy that your current incandescent bulbs. Insulating your hot water heater will prevent your water heater from wasting energy and save you money.

When you buy new appliances to improve your home, don?t just set the old ones out by the curb to take up space in the land fill. Take some time to find a local recycler if they are broken. If they still work, donate them to your favorite charity or sell them for a few dollars to someone who needs them.

Before painting over a wall previously painted with glossy paint, prime the Lighting Contractors walls with a good primer. This helps the paint adhere to the wall better, and prevents the new paint from peeling. Priming is especially helpful if you are changing the wall color from a dark color to a lighter one, as it may reduce the number of coats you need to apply.

Clean kitchen counters can help to sell a house. Remove everything except your coffee pot, a nice set of knives, and perhaps a bowl of fruit. The cleaner your counter tops are, the more organized your kitchen will appear. Your kitchen will also feel larger and more user friendly.

Lighting

Update your bathroom to make your house feel like a home. Every member of the family spends quite a bit of time in this room, but we often overlook giving it an update during a remodel. You can do easy changes by replacing wallpapers, lighting fixtures, and cabinetry, to create a fresh look.

If your living room is dark even though you have a lot of windows, there are ways to ensure that light will get through. Installing skylights is a great way to save on energy bills because it cuts down on the use of lamps, and it will ensure that natural lighting comes through. Choosing to paint your living room warm and inviting colors such as orange, yellow, or light brown can create a feeling of warmth and light. Make sure to decorate with light wood colored furniture instead of dark and heavy oaks.

Wiring

Make sure that there is nelectrical wiringn any part of the structure that you plan on demolishing. You don?t want to start tearing something down only to discover something that may be too expensive to relocate. You may be in a hurry to start your project, but you don?t want any surprises later, so you need to take your time.

When looking for wise home improvement projects to undertake, consider adding a dedicated space for computer networking equipment. The electronic needs of the modern home are always growing. A clean, dry, well air-conditioned space, with easy access to electrical power and network wiring, will give current and future owners, a convenient hub for electronics wired throughout the house.
Electrical Wiring
Almost all DIY projects are pretty easy and self-explanatory. Most people can paint a room, clean storm windows, and make minor repairs. Be careful not to overextend your actual DIY abilities in more complex areas. Unless you really know what you are doing, you are likely to have trouble (and encounter danger) with projects such as DIY electrical wiring and DIY sewer line replacement. Call an expert!

Now that you have gathered the knowledge that is needed to complete home projects, gather the tools that you need to get going. If you find that you are stuck at some point of your project, take the time to re-read the information from this article to see if you can find the solution to the problem.

How Sliding Glass Doors Can Create More Space and Illuminate ...

The use of glass has become popular these days in building doors. Just one look at them will tell you why: first, they are lighter, and second, you get to see the view outside without the need to open your door. As such, glass doors have now become a common sight in many American homes.

In the past, when glass was still not widely used, wood was the material of choice in building doors. Wood offers greater security, as intruders won't be able to barge in without making noise; they also have the effect of creating an organic feel over the structure. However, the problem with wood is that at some point it will begin to show signs of decay.

Because of that, sliding glass doors are becoming a popular alternative to wood doors. Contrary to most beliefs, sliding glass doors work not only for beach homes; through proper installation and design, they can complement almost any type of home. With proper maintenance, sliding glass doors can last longer than wooden doors.

Typically, sliding glass doors are larger than traditional ones. Thus, they are more useful when moving large objects in and out of your house. Because of greater space, moving that dining set to your patio or hauling that Christmas tree to your living room can be easier, and you no longer have to worry about banging them on the door frame.

Sliding glass doors also allow natural light to enter your home. That way, you don't have to use electric lights as often as before, allowing you to cut down on your energy bills. For residents of Louisville doors made of glass are the best option in rejuvenating their drab rooms, as they found that glass doors create the illusion of greater space.

Probably the best thing about sliding glass doors is that they help keep out the elements while still allowing you to see the view outside. If you are a busy parent, glass doors can be useful for you, as you can keep on eye on your children as they play in the yard. Also, in KY windows made of glass have allowed residents to keep tabs on what's happening on their yard without having to go outside.

Using the right materials to construct parts of your house can drastically improve your house's condition, and for residents of Louisville doors made of glass was what made that change possible. So if you feel your house is in need of better lighting, consider using a sliding glass door. To know more about sliding glass doors, you can find info about them on these websites: ehow.com and hubpages.com.

AMS teacher headed to South Africa, Middle East

By Jim Tatum
Summerville Journal Scene??

Sixth grader Sara Mueller is learning where Bahrain and Qatar are located as Woods?points to where Vasco Da Gama rounded the tip of South Africa on?the way to India.

Anyone who has sat in on a Pren Woods class project knows the man goes the extra mile to make learning fun, interesting, effective, and relevant.

This summer, the popular Alston Middle School teacher will be going the extra mile ? or more specifically, the extra thousands of miles ? to add to his already formidable array of knowledge and experience as he spends most of his summer in Africa.

Woods was recently chosen to participate in two foreign study programs, the Teachers Educating Across Cultures in Harmony (TEACH) program, with which he will spend a week in Bahrain and Quatar. He has also been selected as recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities-funded summer institute, South

Africa:?History and Culture. He will spend five weeks in South Africa following his trip to Bahrain and Quatar.

TEACH is a program aimed at cross cultural exchanges and increased knowledge between

educators in the United States and the Arab World, Woods said. Hosted by the Bilateral US-Arab Chamber of Commerce, the purpose of the symposium is to raise awareness, understanding, and cooperation between educators in the United States and the Middle East, he said.

?I think these are wonderful opportunities on so many levels,? Woods said. ?It?s an opportunity to explore the question of academic freedom, for example. There is so much I want to explore.?

Woods is no stranger to foreign junkets; indeed, his life?s journey seems to be in large part a quest for knowledge, understanding, and perspective from all over the world.

?I feel like it is incumbent upon me as a historian, educator, and human being to learn as much as possible about the Middle East from those voices themselves ? voices which have been distorted and marginalized,? he said. ?In a practical sense, I see the Bahrain and Qatar institute building upon my coursework on the Middle East at Oxford University (Exeter College) and my recent Fulbright to Turkey. I feel like I am getting better tools to combat the ill-informed and sometimes prejudicial views about this part of the world, roles of women, and Muslims.?

As to the South African trip, Woods says he is looking forward to five weeks he will spend there. That trip will involve quite a bit of travel, with stops in Capetown, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, and many other points of interest.

In fact, Woods is especially looking forward to this trip because it will be his second time there, he said. As a Fulbright Scholar in 2007, he traveled and studied in South Africa and said he is very interested to see what changes may have occurred since that time.

?I am excited about my return to South Africa,? he said. ??Specific areas of research for me include how sectors of South African society are dealing with the HIV crisis, immigration issues and the evolving South Africa with regards to its apartheid legacy. I am curious about emerging civil rights for black South Africans and definitions of race.?

Despite hundreds of years of Apartheid rule and a reputation for being less than hospitable to immigrants, particularly black immigrants, South Africa is nonetheless seen as a veritable cultural and economic ?Mecca? for other emerging and struggling nations, he noted.

?Many of the people seem to take the attitude that, ?it may not be the best situation right now, but it is infinitely better here than where we came from,? Woods said. ??It will be interesting to see what it?s like now ? even only a few years later.?

Woods leaves June 8 for the first leg of his journey; he returns to the U.S. at the end of July, he said.

Salford mayor Ian Stewart turns down Paul Massey's offer of help

Salford's city mayor has turned down an offer from election rival Paul Massey to work alongside him.

Mr Massey, who stood as an independent in the race to be mayor, said he wanted to take Ian Stewart up on his offer of working with anybody who wanted to help improve the city.

Mr Massey, 52, had claimed he could help develop youth services to give teenagers something to do. But Mr Stewart said: ?I have always given the assurance that I will work with any credible individual or organisation who conduct themselves with integrity. I want to work with people who are serious about tackling the issues that Salford faces. With this in mind I will politely be declining Mr Massey?s offer of help.?

Mr Massey said: ?It hasn?t surprised me. It is typical Labour. I was prepared to give Ian Stewart a chance ? you have got to be fair ? but I know what he is about now. I am going to be on his tail until he carries out what he promised the people of Salford.??

As each year passes on the calendar condos are becoming a bigger share in the total Toronto real estate industry. The Toronto condo marketplace is a excellent alternative to home ownership if you are a 1st time real estate buyer or seeking to downgrade your existing real estate investment due to changes within your personal finances or other outside elements. Look These Up

The price of any piece of property will depend largely on size and place. You'll find so many variables to contemplate when buying any piece of real estate. One from the significant concerns would be how long his commute will likely be to his place of employment. Another will be how little or large the home is as time has a way of changing one's preferences.

Let's take, for example, an apartment in a condominium not far from the subway, on Yonge St., and at a fairly low value. It could appear a great alternative, initially. Nonetheless, you need to keep in mind that in real estate if some thing sounds too great to be accurate, it actually is not great. The reason why an apartment expenses so small in such a prestigious location is that the building is very old and requires repairs. This is immediately reflected inside the condo fee, which is 3 occasions higher than a fee in a new condominium. On top of that, the building may be only remotely related to condominiums because it had no amenities present in modern day condominiums in Toronto - no pool, no fitness center, no area for parties, and so on.

Try These Guys Out The amount of home sales inside the downtown core, once you include new and resale condominiums inside the mix, greatly exceeds these within the other parts of Toronto and also experiences more competition from buyers helping to drive up the costs for real estate within the downtown core in general.

There are new condos for sale coming onto the industry regularly, and one of them is certain to be a ideal match for you personally and your loved ones. By performing some analysis to locate the condo community and place that's proper for you personally and by enlisting the aid of a certified real estate agent, your dream of owning a new condo can be realized.

Be wise in calculating your annual expense when you decide to live in a condominium. It isn't only the annual fee you have to pay; you'll find several other charges also. Preserve all these expense in thoughts. Sometimes small expenses accumulate into a huge payable sum. The real estate agent offers you with a service to register the property within your name.

If there were a huge family members a two to three car garage would come in handy. This would also be a excellent spot to store all the tools or bikes that one may well have. Gardening tools like a lawn mower and all the accessories one might require to tend to the front and back yard places.

It's great to go by means of all info obtainable concerning condominiums before you sign up for something. This really is to avoid any future complications..

Facebook stock climbs, but company faces lawsuits

(AP) ? Facebook's fourth day of trading as a public company saw an increase in the company's stock price and shareholder lawsuits related to the social network's botched initial public offering.

Facebook Inc.'s stock climbed $1, or 3.2 percent, to close at $32 on Wednesday. But the gain was only a small reprieve for shareholders. The stock's rocky inaugural trading day Friday was followed by a two-day decline. The stock is still trading nearly 16 percent below its $38 IPO price.

The initial public trading of Facebook's stock was tarnished Friday morning by a half-hour delay, caused by glitches on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It was marred further this week as investors began accusing the banks that arranged the IPO of sharing important information about Facebook's business prospects with some clients and not others.

Several shareholders who bought stock in the IPO have filed lawsuits against Facebook, its executives and Morgan Stanley, the IPO's lead underwriter. At question is whether analysts at the big underwriter investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO, and told only a handful of clients about it.

One suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, claims Facebook's IPO documents contained untrue statements and omitted important facts, such as a "severe reduction in revenue growth" that Facebook was experiencing at the time of the offering. The suit's three plaintiffs, who bought Facebook stock on its first day of trading May 18, claim they were damaged in the process.

Morgan Stanley declined to comment. Facebook said the lawsuit is without merit.

Another lawsuit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court in California, holds Facebook and underwriters liable, claiming that Facebook's IPO documents misled investors. Both suits seek class action status on behalf of investors who bought Facebook stock on Friday and lost money.

"No one gets it perfect, as far as saying what the financial results are," said Anthony Michael Sabino, professor at John's University's Peter J. Tobin College of Business. The bottom line, he added, is whether Facebook or the underwriter had material information about Facebook's finances that was not disclosed publicly.

"At this moment, it's still too early to say," he said. "We don't know enough, but this could turn out to be an issue."

What is known is that beginning in March, Facebook began meeting with analysts at the underwriting firms. The gatherings are a customary part of the IPO process and are designed to help analysts understand the company's business so they can make accurate financial projections.

On May 9, day-three of Facebook's pre-IPO roadshow to meet with prospective investors, the company filed an amended IPO document that said its mobile users were growing faster than revenue. According to a person familiar with the matter, Facebook then had another meeting with analysts and told them that based on the new information in the filings, the analysts' forecasts should be at the low end of the range that the company gave them in April. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not publicly authorized to discuss the matter.

Adding to the day's events, Facebook was in talks with the New York Stock Exchange to move its stock from the Nasdaq Stock Market after the botched offering, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The news of the talks was first reported by Reuters.

NYSE spokesman Rich Adamonis said: "There have been no discussions with Facebook regarding switching their listing in light of the events of the last week, nor do we think a discussion along those lines would be appropriate at this time."

A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment.
