Sometimes, I feel that the majority of our teachers deserve being disrespected by the government, by the ministry, by the parents, by the students and by the country. Their golden silence is a golden opportunity for those mentioned above to walk all over them and put them under their boots and shoes.
I never thought that one day I would find myself writing these lines about the teachers I have always so much admired. But this is our truth. Most of the people who work with us in schools, delegations, academies, and ministries do not deserve being called teachers. Simply because they are not learning anything from what happens to them and keep going to schools only to get paid.
When the minister ordered a pay reduction from the salaries of teachers who participated in strikes, some so-called teachers started to work instead of striking as they had been doing because they are afraid of the impact on their salaries. This is a sign of hypocrisy on the part of these employees/teachers.
A teacher is more than an employee who earns a salary at the end of the month and who opens his mouth only to cry when the ministry takes from his pocket or cuts from his income. A teacher is a person who bakes minds, sharpens lives and touches hearts. A teacher is not just chalk and talk. He or she is a man or woman of deeds and dignity and not merely someone of words who worships money.
This fear of having one?s salary cut shows that these people are unable to die defending their principles and rights. Changing societies and educational and social systems does not happen without sacrifice. The history of change is full of great men and women who went to jail, were sentenced to death and deprived of their rights in order to achieve their noble goals and dreams.
Our so called teachers have shown how shallow they are when the salary of a day or two was taken from their income. They offer meaningless justifications in public but within themselves they know more than anyone else that what prevents them from participating in strikes is the fear of pay cuts from their salaries.
I think that teachers who love their jobs and respect the ethics of this noble profession should find new ways to react and to get out of this deadly and foolish silence which has never been ?golden.? Morocco?s teachers should break the slavery of unions and ministries and express their anger and disappointment with the current absurdity and futility of the educational system as a whole.
There is a general feeling of disdain among all men and women of education who respect themselves. These teachers should stand up to unveil the nets of corruption inside our unions, delegations and academies. Cleaning the local houses and schools will lead, directly and indirectly, to cleaning the national house.
A real and good teacher will always defend his nation and will help its children get ready to live and face the challenges of tomorrow. We can lose our present but we should not lose our future.
They can cut from our salaries, but they cannot cut from our dignity and self-respect. Shame on those who accept to see teachers disrespected and disdained without the feeling of bleeding inside their hearts. Let them cut from salaries and let us go on fighting for our rights.
