Ford to Lift Curtain on Aluminum F-150?

It?s been a poorly kept secret that Ford?s next-generation fullsize F-Series pickups will rely on generous amounts of aluminum to reduce weight and fuel consumption.

And while Ford declines to confirm the next F-Series will be aluminum-intensive, a well-placed source says each passing day makes it less likely Ford can change course and stick with steel for the body-in-white, pickup bed and most exterior body panels.

Ford is spending tens of millions of dollars on manufacturing equipment intended for building the entire cab, including body-in-white and closure panels, from aluminum for both the new light-duty and heavy-duty pickups, the source says.

In addition, the bed will be aluminum for all F-150s but will be steel for the Super Duty trucks. Frames for all F-Series pickups will be made of steel.

The new pickups, slated as ?15 models, are expected to begin production in 2014, with the Dearborn, MI, plant leading the launch, followed by Kansas City and, for the Super Duties, Kentucky Truck, the source says.

After truck production begins, Ford?s fullsize SUVs will spring from the same platform, also integrating an aluminum body-in-white and closure panels, the source says.

Ford has been tightlipped on details about the new F-Series. The auto maker?s press conference on Tuesday, the second media day at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, will feature the Transit and Transit Connect commercial vehicles.

But the venue for the press conference is not the Ford stand in Cobo Center. Rather it will be next door at Joe Louis Arena. A long, heated corridor is being constructed allowing journalists to walk from Cobo directly to the home of the Detroit Red Wings.

Ford declines to confirm if the new F-Series will be on display. But with the auto maker going to such lengths, a Joe Louis Arena unveiling for the brand?s most important marque, which has been North America?s best-selling vehicle for 31 years, would be fitting.

Adding to the intrigue is an off-site gathering place nearby on Congress Street where the auto maker will host NAIAS journalists and visitors, to be named the ?Ford Truck Lounge.?

Converting the F-Series to aluminum raises numerous questions: How much more will an aluminum F-150 cost? How expensive will it be to repair aluminum body panels? With hundreds of pounds of mass removed, could a 4-cyl. engine provide enough motivation, even for towing?

Aluminum can cost auto makers up to $2 per pound, compared with $0.30 to $0.50 per pound for steel.

Alcoa, the world?s largest aluminum producer, declines to discuss the F-Series program or confirm its use of aluminum.

But spokesman Kevin Lowery says aluminum suppliers have been expanding capacity to serve the auto industry?s growing demands.

By 2025, the use of aluminum will increase from an average 343 lbs. (156 kg) per light vehicle currently to 550 lbs. (249 kg), according to Ducker Worldwide.

Lowery says a fuel-economy gain of up to 7% can be achieved for every 10% in a vehicle?s weight reduction. Ford has said it intends to take up to 700 lbs. (318 kg) of mass out of its next-generation trucks.

Last spring, Alcoa broke ground on a $300 million expansion of its aluminum sheet and plate plant in Davenport, IA. The world?s widest rolling mill is so large it occupies a second city as well, neighboring Riverdale. The first coils should roll off the line later this year.

Lowery says most of the new capacity, dedicated for automotive applications, already has been booked as part of multi-year contract agreements.

?Auto makers are driven by a desire to make cars more fuel-efficient, safe and durable,? Lowery says. Aluminum-intensive vehicles are gaining traction, from the Jaguar XJ and Audi A8 to models launched more recently such as Tesla?s Model S and the world?s first all-aluminum SUV, the redesigned ?13 Range Rover.

Some hardcore truck customers may question whether aluminum, which can cut weight as much as 50% compared with steel, can provide the same durability, especially in the bed.

Lowery says an aluminum pickup bed could be highly rigid and that aluminum ?is probably one of the most durable materials in the world,? used extensively by the U.S. military in the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle.

He also refers to the aluminum-intensive ?FED? Fuel Efficiency Demonstrator military concept vehicle, which Alcoa and engineering partner Ricardo helped build.

?Don?t you think the U.S. Army would build their vehicles from some of the most durable materials in the world?? Lowery asks. ?Aluminum is light, strong, durable and infinitely recyclable.?

Asked whether an aluminum pickup bed would need a protective plastic liner, Lowery scoffs. ?They don?t have liners on Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and they don?t have liners in Humvees. Aluminum is used in blast shields underneath vehicles to protect the troops. This stuff saves lives.?

Crosstown rival General Motors is launching all-new fullsize pickups this year that also will take advantage of aluminum?s lightweight properties. For instance, engine blocks and hoods are aluminum, as are front suspension components in some models.

But GM opted for high-strength steel for frames and cab structures for the new trucks. ?We know how to get the most out of it, and we know it will stand up to the tough treatment that truck customers can dish out,? GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson says.

Sticking with steel also keeps pickups more affordable, he says. ?Last time I looked at the economic data, middle-class buyers weren't getting any richer.?

Wilkinson admits the divergent paths for GM and Ford will make for interesting times in the market. ?Not in 100 years have the major truck makers staked out such different strategies,? he says.

[News] Samsung debuts Galaxy S II Plus, banking on success of S II

Samsung has announced a new smartphone in its Galaxy line, the S II Plus, that looks similar to last year's model but brings some specs and software up to date.

The Galaxy S II Plus is smaller than the Galaxy S III 4.8-inch phone, but larger than the Galaxy S III Mini's 4-inch display. When compared to the S II, the S II Plus retains the same 4.3-inch display with 800 by 480 pixel resolution and the same 8-megapixel camera on the back.

What's new in the S II Plus is the 1.2GHz dual-core processor upgrade and the latest version of Android, 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. It also comes with the latest TouchWiz UI that includes features seen on the newer models such as S-Voice, voice unlock, and popup video, which allows you to watch a video on an area of the screen while running other apps underneath. There's 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage and a 1,650 mAh battery. Some models will also have NFC.

So what's special about the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus? Frankly, not much. In June 2012, Samsung said it has sold more than 28 million units of the original S II, and the S II Plus simply refreshes the specs and updates the software of the older model while banking on its popularity. This way, the S II Plus becomes a halfway option between the 4-inch S III Mini and the 4.8-inch S III.

You will be able to get the S II Plus in two color versions, like the S III models, in white and dark blue, but Samsung did not say when or where the handset will be released first, or how much it would cost.

Ford hiring 2,200 U.S. white-collar staff as vehicle lineup expands

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co plans to fill 2,200 white-collar positions this year in product development and other units based in the United States as the automaker expands and updates its vehicle lineup worldwide.

About 75 percent of the jobs will be in engineering, manufacturing and information technology, Ford said in a statement on Friday, describing this as its largest increase in new salaried positions in more than a decade.

"As we expand our product lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles, we need more people in critical areas," said Joe Hinrichs, head of Ford's North and South American operations.

The No.2 U.S. automaker is relying in part on temporary workers and interns to fill those positions. Some of the jobs already exist, but are vacant at the moment.

Beyond that, Ford estimated that it will add about 900 new jobs to its current salaried workforce in North America. Ford cautioned that the figure is preliminary and could change.

Like many U.S. companies, Ford is tackling its growth goals with a smaller workforce than it had before the recession. In 2006, Ford employed 38,600 salaried workers in North America. At the end of last year, that figure was 28,400.

Still, Ford's current white-collar workforce has grown 13.6 percent in its largest and most profitable market since the depths of the U.S. economic recession in 2009.

Meanwhile, Ford is expanding and refreshing its models worldwide. In China, Ford aims to sell 15 models, up from its current five. It is also revamping it South American lineup and in Europe is launching 15 new or refreshed models over the next five years.

The 2,200 new salaried workers expected this year are in addition to more than 8,100 hourly and salaried workers Ford hired in the United States last year. About 1,000 were hourly jobs that were recently brought in-house that were once performed in other locations or by Ford suppliers in Mexico and Japan.

In 2011, Ford and the United Auto Workers union struck a deal that would require the automaker to create or retain 12,000 U.S. hourly jobs by 2015. On Friday, Ford said it had fulfilled half of that commitment.

3,000-year-old tombs unearthed in Egypt

Archaeologists say they have discovered a string of 3,000-year-old rock tombs in the ancient Egyptian city of Luxor, containing the remains of wooden coffins, skeletons, furniture and canopic jars.

The tombs were dug within the funerary temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep II, who reigned from 1427 to 1401 B.C. during Egypt's 18th Dynasty. However, the newfound tombs appear to be part of a more recent cemetery. In Thursday's announcement of the discovery, Egyptian Antiquities Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said they date back to the beginning of a transitional period that lasted from 1075 to 664 B.C.

Ibrahim said a team led by Italian archaeologist Angelo Sesana made the discovery while cleaning up the site in the course of an excavation at Amenhotep II's temple.

"When we began digging, the area was only a mound of debris. We were in no way certain of what we would find." Sesana told the Italian news service ANSA.

Sesana, who has led excavations within the temple's ruins for 15 years, voiced excitement over the find: "It moves you like little else to bring back to life someone who sought immortality 4,000 years ago."

Each of the tombs consists of a pit that leads to a burial chamber. The wooden coffins found within the chambers bore decorations in red and black ink, and contained the remains of skeletons, Ibrahim said. Mansour Barek, the antiquities supervisor at Luxor, said the archaeologists found 12 canopic jars ? some made of limestone, and others made of fired clay. Such jars were used in ancient Egypt to preserve the internal organs of the dead.

Barek said the lids of the jars were in the shape of the four sons of the Egyptian god Horus: Imsety, with a human head, the spirit who protects the liver; Hapi, a baboon-headed spirit responsible for the lungs; the jackal-headed Duamutef, who guards the stomach; and falcon-headed Qebehsenuef, who guards the intestines.

The antiquities ministry said the artifacts were transferred to storage in Luxor for maintenance and restoration, in preparation for museum display.

Insomma, ragionando in ottica futura e prevedendo ancora ampi margini di miglioramento, Parsons ha tutto per affermarsi come una delle ali piccole pi? forti del panorama NBA.

#9 Marco Belinelli, Chicago Bulls

Terzo (per gradimento popolare e mediatico) ambasciatore del basket italiano in terra d?oltreoceano, Belinelli si affacciava a questa stagione sotto i migliori auspici (arrivare in una squadra del prestigio dei Bulls non ? roba da tutti) ma accompagnato dal solito scetticismo.

Scetticismo che aveva inizialmente trovato conforto nei fatti, dato che il mese di Novembre si era trasformata in una vera e propria tortura cinese per il talento di S.Giovanni in Persiceto, sempre sottotono quando chiamato in causa dal proprio allenatore.

Poi la svolta: Rip Hamilton subisce un infortunio al piede, lo spot di guardia in quintetto base si libera e cos? coach Thibodeau si vede ?costretto? a buttare nella mischia il nostro numero 8.
Che sale di giri, sia in attacco che in difesa, arrivando per ben 12 volte su 17 apparizioni tra Dicembre e Gennaio in doppia cifra di punti, e guadagnandosi la fiducia dell?allenatore grazie ad importanti miglioramenti nella propria met? campo.

Se prima molti nutrivano seri dubbi sulle potenzialit? del Beli all?interno di un contesto NBA, la maggior parte dei detrattori sicuramente si sar? ricreduta, per la felicit? di tutti quei tifosi italiani che seguono assiduamente le avventure dei nostri portacolori in America.

#8 Nikola Pekovic, Minnesota Timberwolves

Nonostante i numerosi infortuni rimediati da molti componenti dei T?Wolves in questa prima parte di stagione, la squadra del Minnesota sta comunque disputando un ottimo campionato.

Ad aiutarla nell?impresa, affermandosi come uno degli uomini cardine nel sistema ideato da coach Adelman, ? sicuramente stato il montenegrino Nikola Pekovic, centrone dai mezzi fisici possenti (oltre 2.10 per 130 chilogrammi) e dallo sguardo aggressivo.

Rimediando alla pressocch? perenne assenza (causa infortuni) di Kevin Love sotto i tabelloni, infatti, Pekovic ? nettamente salito di livello rispetto alle passate stagioni, arrivando ad incrementare quasi tutte le proprie cifre statistiche pi? importanti; il montenegrino segna infatti quasi 16 punti ad alzata di palla (13.9 l?anno scorso), conditi da ben oltre 8 rimbalzi (7.4) ed una stoppata di media.

Nella Lega in cui domina chi ha pi? mezzi atletici o compie le giocate pi? funamboliche, Pekovic ci sta dando un?importante dimostrazione di come il semplice talento tecnico possa ancora sopperire a mancanze di tipo atletico, permettendogli di fare la differenza.

#7 Michael Kidd Gilchrist, Charlotte Bobcats

Al momento il pi? giovane giocatore della Lega con soli 19 anni sul groppone, MKG si sta rivelando essere uno dei migliori difensori dell?intero panorama NBA.

Sebbene nella fase offensiva il suo gioco non brilli (realizza appena 10 punti di media con uno scarso 49% dal campo per uno che fa dei tiri ?al ferro? il suo marchio di fabbrica), ? in quella difensiva che le sue abilit? tendono a premiarlo (lunghezza delle leve, atletismo e forte intelligenza nella marcatura e nella spaziatura difensiva); stoppa in media quasi un tiro e mezzo e ruba un pallone a partita, ma la maggior parte del lavoro che fa per aiutare i propri compagni spesso non finisce sul foglio delle statistiche.

Tra qualche anno, nessuno potr? levargli un posto nel primo quintetto difensivo nella Lega?

#6 Greivis Vasquez, New Orleans Hornets

Votato ?giocatore della settimana? per la Western Conference tra la fine di Dicembre e gli esordi del nuovo anno. 20 punti di media con oltre 10 assist e quasi 6.5 rimbalzi nelle ultime 7 gare. Vicino alla tripla doppia per ben tre volte negli ultimi dieci giorni. Sfido chiunque a confessare di non aver sottovalutato il valore di questo ragazzo ad?inizio anno!

Vasquez sta giocando una pallacanestro straordinaria se pensiamo al livello di chi lo circonda e al valore della squadra in cui milita (NOLA ha per ora il peggior record ad Ovest) e i quasi 9 assist a partita lo stanno a confermare, inserendolo di diritto nella top 10 delle point guard della Lega.

Nonostante i mezzi atletico-fisici non lo aiutino nelle sfide con i propri diretti avversari, il venezuelano non sta affatto sfigurando nella sua prima stagione come starter del quintetto base degli Hornets e sta anzi dimostrando di potersela giocare contro chiunque. E? un serio candidato al titolo di Most Improved Player del 2013.

#5 Andre Miller, Denver Nuggets

Giunto alla sua quattordicesima stagione NBA, Andre Miller si sta rivelando il vero e proprio colpaccio del mercato estivo dei Nuggets, che lo hanno rifirmato l?11 Luglio come primo backup di Ty Lawson, point guard titolare di Denver.

E? vecchio, vero. E? lento, vero. Ma ? altrettanto vero che George Karl non potrebbe farne a meno per nessuna ragione al mondo.

Miller sta risultando fondamentale nel flow del gioco dei Nuggets, uscendo dalla panchina come acquietatore delle tormentate acque dell?attacco dei suoi, portando calma ed equilibrio ad una squadra che altrimenti vivrebbe esclusivamente di fiammate e tentativi di giocate in velocit?.

E? secondo nel roster di Denver per plus/minus medio, ha una media di quasi 5 assist e mezzo a serata e ha di recente toccato quota 15.000 punti diventando l?ottavo giocatore nella storia (al pari di tali John Stockton, Oscar Robertson e Magic Johnson) ad arrivare ad un tale traguardo assieme a 7.500 assist.

In quella che doveva essere la stagione della trionfale riscossa dei Lakers grazie al super mercato estivo che aveva portato al fianco di Kobe giocatori del calibro di Steve Nash e Dwight Howard, niente finora ? andato per il verso giusto, o quasi.

Sebbene infatti la squadra si trovi attualmente fuori dalla griglia playoff (con un record perdente di 15-17), abbia gi? cambiato guida tecnica e subito numerosi importanti infortuni, qualcuno pu? invece ritenersi soddisfatto del proprio inizio di stagione, e quel qualcuno risponde al nome di Ron Artest? pardon, Metta World Peace.

e per la prima volta sta avendo un impatto importante anche in zona d?attacco: gli oltre 13 punti di media sono il suo massimo con i Lakers, cos? come la sua percentuale dal campo (45%) e quella nei tiri liberi (75%).

Microsoft announces "me too" cloud price drop for Azure

This price cutting back-and-forth began in early November when AWS announced an?18% reduction?in the cost of its virtual machines running on its Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) service. Later in the month,?Google announced a 5% drop?in the price of its pay as you go virtual machine service named Google Compute Engine. Along with that news the company also made a 10-fold increase in the VM instances types available on the platform.

During the first day of AWS's first user conference, the company?announced another price reduction, this time for its Simple Storage Service (S3) service, about a 25% drop in its cost. The next day,?Google once again lowered its prices?for its storage service. Now, a week later, Microsoft is jumping in on the price dropping party too.

Microsoft's drop in its Azure prices bring its standard storage offering - which includes automatic geo-replication - to the exact same cost and price structure as AWS's standard storage rates for S3.
